What happens next?
Once you have contacted us to arrange a visit, you and your child will have the opportunity to take a look round the setting and spend a few hours getting to know us. If you decide you would like to proceed, you will be guided through the settling process and policies. Once you have reviewed the terms and conditions and have paid the deposit; we will email you the Registration pack and Permission forms.
It is imperative that you share with us information regarding your child’s likes, dislikes, allergies, habits, behaviour, medical history, preferences etc, anything you feel is important as it gives us an excellent starting point. Whilst completing the registration pack, the older children can have fun filling in ‘All about me’ booklet. This will give us an idea about your child’s favourite things and it will also help with the settling process.
We will keep in contact with you, and if there is anything you need, then do not hesitate to contact us.
Preparing your child for their first day
Talk to your child about the ‘big day’ using positive language. Turn it in to an adventure, a new journey they are about to embark on, mentioning all the new and exciting things they will do. It is important they are given the opportunity to settle-in.
Separation anxiety
Separation anxiety occurs at a time when infants start to become aware that their parents are unique individuals. Because they have incomplete memory and no sense of time, these young children fear any departure of their parents may be permanent.
Things to do:
The Big day
The first day at the setting can be daunting for both parents and child. We will make your child’s first experience away from you as comfortable as possible. We have recommended a settling-in procedures below, however, you know your child best, so we will work with you:
Day 1 30 minutes |
We suggest that you stay with your child and spend half an hour together in the setting. This will normally be enough for your child's first day. Please bring in the ‘All about me’ booklet, Registration Pack, Permission forms, a copy of your child's Birth certificate and a passport size photograph of your child. |
Day 2 1 hour |
All being well, you will be encouraged to leave your child for an hour. During this time we can see how well they manage on their own. |
Day 3 5 hours |
By Day three we recommend you leave your child for the morning session |
Day 4 All day |
By day four your child may be ready to stay by him/herself. Do not be concerned if this is not the case, some children arrive on Day 1 as if they have been coming for years but others will take a little longer to settle in. |
Day 5 All day |
By day five your child should be more settled. |
Parents should never leave their child looking anxious, sad or in tears as this does not help assist the child in being trustful and relaxed in the new environment with the new carers. A big hug and kiss with the words ‘mummy/daddy/carer will be back to collect you later on’ is so reassuring to a child and aids the settling in procedure to be less traumatic. It can take up-to 1-2 month for a child to settle, please allow the child time to settle in. at first, your child will be unsettled until they are used to the new environment and routine. The Team are happy to reassure parents by sending photos and updates. In addition, please rest assured that if the team is concerned about your child’s unsettled behaviour, we will let you know promptly.
There will be no charge for day 1 (30minutes) and day 2 (1 hour)of the settling-in period.
School admission
A child should by law be attending school at the beginning of the term following his/her 5th birthday. In Bromley, children start school either in September or January depending on their date of birth. Children born September to February will start in September and children born March to August will start in January. However, in line with new legislation parents/carers of children born on or after 1 March now have the option of choosing a September start for their child.
The relevant application process runs during the autumn term a full year before the child is due to start school. For more information visit Bromley.gov
